Tottenham player ‘lashes out in tunnel’ as Sky Sports share full details

Tottenham are once again left licking their wounds following another Premier League defeat, a fourth in as many meetings against Chelsea.

Ange Postecoglou’s men remain a pitiful 14th as the head coach once again lost his composure after the final whistle with the press.

Pape Sarr’s goal was disallowed after a VAR check, suffering the same fate as Moises Caicedo for the hosts after Enzo Fernandez had headed what transpired to be the decider.

Tottenham player caught up in tunnel incident

Tottenham must now look to bounce back against the Premier League’s bottom side Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (6 April) following Thursday’s loss.

On another day, they could have nicked something at Chelsea but by and large, still looked toothless, disjointed and lacking belief.

The travelling supporters were up in arms and treated with kid gloves by Postecoglou and the team at the final whistle, the squad showing their appreciation but wisely keeping some distance.

Shortly afterwards, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was seen punching the plastic tunnel at Stamford Bridge as he trudged away.

Sky Sports‘ Peter Smith delivered the report on the brief incident (3 April, 22:08): “Vicario has just angrily punched the tunnel as he made his way off the pitch.

“Lots of frustration in the Tottenham camp, with the fans giving plenty of stick to the players who did go over to applaud them. Ange Postecoglou watched on from a distance after the stick he got in the game.”

Southampton clash a trial run for Frankfurt

Tottenham now turn their attention to facing a Southampton side against whom it could get embarrassing if they make hard work of a much-needed win, before the Europa League resumes.

Saints have taken 30 games just to hit double figures in the Premier League this season and remain at risk of shattering Derby County’s record-lowest points total in the league’s history. Avoiding defeat at Spurs would ensure they are not the outright worst-performing side in the past 33 years.

Spurs have a massive quarter-final to prepare for

For Spurs – who are almost definitely assured a bottom-half league finish for the first time since 2008 – will now put all their eggs in the basket of their first trophy since the same year.

Eintracht Frankfurt will fancy themselves against the out-of-sorts Lilywhites, though it is anticipated Postecoglou’s side and the supporters will collectively raise their game for the quarter-final tie, which starts in N17 next Thursday (10 April).
