Tottenham next manager: Crazy Jermain Defoe claim made amid Postecoglou sack latest
Tottenham could be in the hunt for a new manager very soon, and a wide range of names have already been linked with the job.
Ange Postecoglou is under intense pressure as Tottenham boss, and he may only have one game to save his job after a dismal season.
Spurs fell to their 17th Premier League defeat of the season against Wolves, and all signs point towards Postecoglou parting ways with the club at the end of the campaign.
While Thiago Motta has been mooted as his replacement, former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe has now been mentioned as a shock option for the Lilywhites.

Alan Pardew suggests Defoe for Tottenham job
Former Newcastle manager and pundit Alan Pardew has just caused a shock, as he has now brought up Defoe’s name as a potential replacement for Postecoglou.
Speaking on talkSPORT (13 April, 7:50pm), Pardew claimed that if he was in charge, he would stick with Postecoglou rather than gambling on a new manager giving them a boost.
Stat | Jermain Defoe |
Appearances | 363 |
Goals | 143 |
Assists | 29 |
“That kind of [narrative] – ‘if Ange goes tomorrow, the disruption could give Spurs a boost. That manager’s gone and off we go with a clean slate with Jermain Defoe, or whoever it’s going to be,'” Pardew claimed.
“If I was the owner of Spurs, I would stick with [Postecoglou].”
Defoe cannot replace Postecoglou at Spurs
If Postecoglou does depart Spurs, Defoe cannot be his replacement despite his popularity from his playing days.
Defoe has no coaching experience, and given the mammoth task at hand, a more experienced manager would be needed to steady the ship.
Pardew’s suggestion of Defoe has seemingly come out of nowhere, meaning that he is unlikely to be a credible candidate anyway, but if he is even considered for the role, alarm bells will be ringing with regard to the decision-making at the highest levels of Tottenham.
Ryan Mason could be considered on an interim basis if Postecoglou departs before the end of the season, having impressed in the role before, but it appears almost impossible that Defoe will be handed any kind of managerial role at Spurs at this stage.
Spurs are on course for one of their lowest-ever Premier League finishes, and without Europa League success, the writing is on the wall for Postecoglou.
