Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur shares message on Instagram after long-awaited Uruguay return

Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur has posted a message on his personal Instagram account after making his long-awaited return for Uruguay.

The 26-year-old made his first appearance for his national side since October 2022 as a second-half substitute in a 2-0 win over Argentina.

Bentancur has been eased back into action by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury.

Postecoglou has handed the midfielder three substitute appearances over the past month, totalling around an hour on the field.

His half-an-hour cameo against Argentina in the early hours of Friday (17 November) was the most action Bentancur has managed in over a year.

The former Juventus ace took to social media after the game to post: “So nice to wear these colours again!!!”

Uruguay are next in action against Bolivia on Tuesday (21 November), while Spurs’ next match is at home to Aston Villa on 26 November.

Former Spurs defender Alan Hutton told Tottenham News:

“It’s an interesting subject,” Hutton said when asked if Bentancur should now be starting for Spurs. “In previous seasons, he definitely made them better.

“He’s an outstanding footballer. At this moment in time, if it’s me and knowing how Ange worked when he was at Celtic, I don’t think he comes back in yet.

“I think obviously [Pape Matar] Sarr and [Yves] Bissouma have been outstanding. Bissouma took a little bit of time to bed in and we’re now seeing the best of him.

“Sarr is obviously so young; he gives the team a lot of energy, a lot of drive, so I don’t see any reason to change it.

“If you were to do that, I think it upsets the team a little bit. Footballers understand it. When things are going well, you have to bide your time and I think he’s in that situation at this moment in time.”
