Tottenham make ‘Terrible’ new announcement as ‘Farce’ destroyed

Tottenham are back in the news headlines again, though this time it has nothing to do with happenings on the pitch.

Across the current campaign, Tottenham have been at the front of every news outlet as a result of the dismal season that has been endured by many.

Whether it be an update on the possible sacking of Ange Postecoglou or a new report linking Son Heung-Min with a move away, news has always found Spurs.

Off the back of a 4-1 win against Ipswich Town, Spurs appeared as though they may have been moving away from the spotlight but they have dragged themselves right back with a recent decision slammed.

Tottenham slammed over off-field matter

With the proposed Qatari takeover and questions over the futures of several senior figures, Spurs have been the topic of conversation more often than not, but a recent decision made by the club will open them up to nothing but ridicule.

Via the print edition of the Daily Mail (26 February, pg 63), it is said that Spurs have made a formal request to broadcasters for them to stop referring to them as just ‘Tottenham’.

‘Spurs’ or ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ have been passed as appropriate, while the singular of the latter isn’t acceptable with Ian Herbert making clear that this isn’t a joke.

In his column, Herbert said: “How can these club geniuses not see how terrible this farce looks?

“I thought brand management was all about optics – the image you create for your product. Tottenham’s geniuses neglect to see that retiring off ‘Tottenham’ has a terrible look.”

Tottenham have bigger concerns to deal with

Given the season that Spurs have endured and the failures both on and off the pitch, it is quite astounding to see them seemingly so offended by the shortening of their name which has been used for countless years, even by those employed at the club.

Tottenham have bigger issues to deal with

When taking into account what is likely to be another trophyless season, the failures from a recruitment point of view and the unrest among the fanbase, it is somewhat worrying to see that this has even been identified as a point of interest.

The only focus for Spurs has to be on improving things on the pitch, not the way they are referred to by broadcasters.

Tottenham have already faced ridicule throughout the campaign, and this will do nothing to aid those concerns.
