Tottenham make Cristian Romero captaincy decision as lessons to be learned

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has come under fire in the past few days after being sent off against Manchester United.

Romero was dismissed for a late tackle on Casemiro and will now miss Spurs’ next four Premier League matches through suspension.

Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by Man United at Old Trafford, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes both grabbing goals as the Red Devils made the man advantage count.

It’s not the first time that the Argentine has had disciplinary issues, and his position as captain of the North London club is now being called into question.

Tottenham to continue with Cristian Romero as captain

Thomas Frank is already struggling at Tottenham, with his side sitting a lowly 15th in the Premier League, and Romero’s recent actions have done little to help the Dane.

The Spurs fanbase are firmly against the former Brentford boss and remain frustrated with the poor results and performances.

Frank appointed Romero as club captain last summer following the departure of Son Heung-Min to Los Angeles FC, but that decision is now coming under scrutiny.

However, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, journalist Sami Mokbel revealed that Tottenham have no plans to strip the centre-back of the captaincy at the moment.

There is an acceptance within the club that Romero needs to learn from the events of the past week, but they still feel he is the right man to lead the team.

Mokbel said: “There is an acknowledgement at Tottenham that [Romero] needs to learn from what’s happened over the past week or so.

“But, I don’t think there’s any imminent decision of them stripping Romero of the captaincy.”

Cristian Romero’s true captaincy style revealed

Mokbel went on to speak about Romero’s style of captaincy, revealing that the 27-year-old is not a ‘traditional’ skipper.

The Argentine reportedly prefers to lead by example and outwardly showcase his credentials as a leader.

Mokbel said: “My understanding of the kind of leadership style Romero has, having spoken to various people, is that he isn’t the traditional captain you would associate with English football.

“He’s an introspective leader, who would lead by example. Maybe he does feel the need to outwardly show that he is the captain of the team, and at the moment that is of detriment to the club.”

As a result of the dismissal against Man United, Romero will serve a four-game suspension.

The defender will miss games against Newcastle United, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace, before returning in the middle of March for a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
