Ange Postecoglou wants Tottenham to take proactive approach to January transfer window

Ange Postecoglou is eager for Tottenham to take a proactive approach to any business they conduct in the January transfer window.

Spurs lead the way at the Premier League summit after making their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61 – the last time they won the title.

The North London side have been linked with numerous players ahead of the window reopening, including Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips.

A recent report by 90min [16 October] suggested Tottenham are monitoring Phillips’ situation at City with a view to making a move in January.

Speaking at a pre-Chelsea press conference on Thursday (2 November), Postecoglou was asked about Spurs’ plans for the winter window.

“My view is if you get business done early it is more helpful because if you leave it until the end then you can miss the opportunity of what you are trying to gain,” he is quoted as saying by Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Tottenham News:

“Listen, Kalvin is a great player. He’s a player that I’ve admired and watched very closely for a long time at Leeds,” he said.

“I don’t think he’s been given a fair opportunity at Manchester City and I think his time has become very difficult there.

“When you look at what Pep [Guardiola] said in pre-season, he had the opportunity to go out on loan but he decided to stay at the club, and now the manager kind of picks John Stones in that position, and Rico Lewis at times.

“Even when Rodri has not been fit, Kalvin hasn’t necessarily been the direct replacement and his game time has been limited there.

“He’s going to have no problem with potential suitors. Newcastle for me would be a great fit for him with [Sandro] Tonali banned – he’d a like-for-like replacement there – but for Tottenham as well.”

Robinson, who made 175 appearances for Tottenham, added: “With [Yves] Bissouma and with Pape Sarr going [to the Africa Cup of Nations] in January, there’s going to be a hole there. It would be a fantastic signing if you can get him on loan.

“I suspect the manager at Manchester City would probably have the same opinion as he did in pre-season – he’d let him go. You wouldn’t necessarily have to pay all of his wages.

“However the deal is structured, it could potentially be a really, really shrewd signing for someone between now and the end of the season.”

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou could have a dilemma on his hands regarding whether or not to select Bissouma against Chelsea on Monday (6 November).
