Ex-Spurs Scout urges PL chiefs to appoint former manager after Tottenham handball drama

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has urged Premier League chiefs to appoint a former manager to oversee VAR decisions following the unsatisfactory handling of the Tottenham draw at Arsenal.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero conceded a penalty after being adjudged to have handled the ball in the six-yard box during his side’s 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium on Sunday 24 September.

Bukayo Saka converted the penalty to put Arsenal back in front after their first-half lead had been wiped out by Son Heung-min, however, the South Korean would score again moments later to once again level the contest.

While King believes the penalty decision was the correct call, he was left in disbelief while speaking to Tottenham News by the length of time it took to arrive at that decision.

“I have said all along, the referees that are sitting in the VAR room, and there are a few of them, are making the same mistakes in there as the referees who are on the pitch.

“Why don’t they use an old manager, player or coach to come in and have a look at these decisions, and pay them accordingly?

“I cannot see how it took so long to decide that there was a handball.

“It was a definite penalty, as unfortunate as it was, it was a penalty and I can’t understand how it takes that long to decide whether it is a penalty or not, because they can see what we see, and I am only watching at home on my television.”

In other Tottenham news, King believes that the club must extend the contract of one star player.
