Tottenham ‘dreadful’ as Robbie Savage sends new Postecoglou message
Robbie Savage has delivered a brutal verdict on Tottenham’s season while sharing his thoughts on Ange Postecoglou.
There has been much discourse on how best to judge Tottenham’s season, and therefore Postecoglou’s standing, due to the Lilywhites’ polar opposite results across different competitions.
Spurs’ UEFA Europa League victory secured the club their first piece of major silverware since 2008 and produced a unifying moment of joy and celebration not seen in North London for a generation.
Conversely, Tottenham broke multiple unfavourable records in the Premier League with their embarrassing 17th-place finish.
It makes summarising the campaign as a whole a difficult task, though Savage did not hold back with his comments.

Savage calls Tottenham ‘dreadful’, offers silver lining for Postecoglou
Postecoglou was clear on his thoughts on Spurs’ season, describing it as outstanding in his post-match press conference following the 4-1 defeat against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (25 May).
The former Celtic manager was adamant that breaking Spurs’ trophy drought will be far more impactful for the club than if they had finished in a more respectable league position.
Competition | Wins | Draws | Losses |
Premier League | 11 | 5 | 22 |
Europa League | 10 | 3 | 2 |
FA Cup | 1 | – | 1 |
Carabao Cup | 4 | – | 1 |
The Australian did concede that finishing one spot above the relegation zone was unacceptable. However, Savage went one step further, blasting Tottenham for their league form, but offering Postecoglou some support.
Savage rated Spurs’ season six out of 10 in his column in the Daily Mirror (31 May, page 59), while writing, “Absolutely dreadful in the league, where they lost 22 games, but Postecoglou won Spurs’ first trophy in 17 years – even if it was in a compeition where they were among the favoruites from the outset.
“If his remit was Champions League football, he delivered.”
The prestige and financial windfall of reaching Europe’s premier competition will certainly speak to Daniel Levy, who is often portrayed as being more interested in such matters, rather than the football itself.

Levy’s radio silence speaks volumes
Levy has never been known to communicate with the wider world very willingly, though he did release a statement following the Europa League victory.
Tellingly, there was little mention of Postecoglou within, and with the season now over, there are still questions to be answered.
The deafening silence coming out of Hotspur Way leaves room for speculation, with every passing day making it even less clear what his plan is going forward.
