Tottenham door opens for new signing as Fabrizio Romano reveals transfer news
Tottenham could be on track to sign Ben Godfrey in the January transfer window after it was reported that the defender can leave Atalanta.
Fabrizio Romana reported on X that the defender is no longer a key part of the project at Atalanta with him left out of the squad for the Super Cup.
The Sun reported [24 December, page 48] that Tottenham had approached Atalanta to acquire the former-Everton defender’s services meaning the Serie A club’s decision could give Spurs the green light for this move.
Tottenham want Ben Godfrey in January
With Tottenham in need lacking defensive options due to injuries in the side, it is no surprise to see Ange Postecoglou searching for reinforcements as a matter of urgency in the window.
Furthermore, gaining a player with Premier League experience would certainly be a positive for the boss as he needs additions that can make an instant impact in the side as the Australian finds himself under pressure in North London.
However, this does feel like a bit of a panic signing from the 59-year-old who is desperate to get a new defender in the door.
The 26-year-old made 15 appearances for Everton in the top flight last term and has just one league appearance in Italy so far, which was from the bench.
With the defender free to leave his current side, Spurs could decide not to waste any time in bringing in back-up but Godfrey could also prove not to be the answer Postecoglou is looking for.
