Tottenham ‘desperate’ to sell player despite ‘Extreme’ crisis

Tottenham are “desperate” to sell left-back Sergio Reguilón, according to Matt Barlow.

Writing via the Daily Mail (27 January, page 11), Barlow reports that the club have been keen to offload the Spaniard for the past two years – with the player’s agent thought to be putting pressure on the club.

Barlow suggests that while Spurs’ injury crisis is “extreme” – with James Maddison the latest to suffer a setback – Ange Postecoglou’s side shot themselves in the foot by starting the season light and failing to maximise squad numbers.

Tottenham named just 23 players in their senior Premier League squad, which is capped at 25. Of those 23, four were goalkeepers, while three players – Djed Spence, Max Robson and Reguilón – were out of favour, which means just 16 outfield players started the season in Postecoglou’s plans.

It is no secret that Spurs are lacking options in their squad. During the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (26 January) – their 13th Premier League loss of the season already – Postecoglou was unable to name a full bench.

However, while some might question why Spurs didn’t fill all 25 of their squad spaces at the beginning of the season, the club’s inability to do this isn’t the fault of Postecoglou, but instead the fault of Daniel Levy.

Although two more spaces were available, it is hard to think of who would have filled these spaces, as Spurs hardly signed anyone in the summer, and are yet to sign an outfield player in the winter transfer window – despite the injuries piling up.

As a result, it seems people are finally beginning to turn on Levy – with the Spurs chairman subject to protests from fans inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the defeat to Leicester on Sunday.

And if the 62-year-old wants to turn things around and save his reputation, he needs to get his wallet out between now and 3 February – especially if they do choose to sell Reguilón.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou can’t use one excuse after what happened against Leicester.
