Tottenham defender Cristian Romero ‘optimistic’ his injury is nothing serious – The Athletic
Early indications suggest the ankle injury sustained by Tottenham defender Cristian Romero while playing for Argentina is nothing serious, as reported by The Athletic (18 October).
Romero was forced off in the 49th minute of Argentina’s 2-0 win over Peru on Tuesday (17 October) after picking up an ankle injury during the first few minutes of the match.
Despite showing initial signs of discomfort, the 25-year-old was able to continue but asked to be substituted shortly after half-time, having had his ankle iced during the break.
However, the 25-year-old is said to be “optimistic” that he will be available for the club’s next match against Fulham on Monday 23 October, and is set to be assessed by Tottenham’s medical team upon his return to north London.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News:
“It would be a major loss if Romero couldn’t play. We have a former England international (Eric Dier) on the bench who could obviously step in if required, although what kind of frame of mind he would be in I am not sure.
“Romero’s absence would definitely worry me a little bit. If it is a situation where the physio says he can play but it is up to the player, it will be up to him to decide, that is how I have always worked it whenever I have been around football clubs.

“If he starts moaning that he is not fit or that he didn’t feel right after the first five minutes, that is down to him. If he says he is fit enough to play, then he plays.
“With the kind of physio staff Premier League clubs have these days, they will soon find out if he can play or not.”
