Tottenham captain Son Heung-min named Premier League Player of the Month for September

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min was named the Premier League Player of the Month for September, winning the award for the fourth time in his career.

The Premier League confirmed on Friday (13 October) that Son and Ange Postecoglou had won the Player of the Month and Manager of the Month awards for September, completing a second consecutive double-swoop for Spurs after James Maddison and Postecoglou won the awards in August.

Son matched the likes of Thiery Henry and Alan Shearer by winning the award for a fourth time, and there are now only six players in history who have been named Player of the Month more times than the South Korean forward.

The 31-year-old scored six goals in four matches throughout the month, including a hattrick against Burnley and a brace versus Arsenal, as well as the opening goal against Liverpool.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News:

“I was surprised but there again he did score goals.

“When you read a newspaper or watch a match on television and they ask somebody for the Man of the Match, it is usually not the player who has put in the best shift but instead the player who has scored a couple of goals, and I think that might be how it works for the Player of the Month award.

“I think Tottenham as a team deserve the start and the awards, certainly Maddison last month and of course the manager.

“Ultimately Son is the captain and has captained the team that has produced and surprised a lot of people, top of the league, and I presume that is partly why he has won it.”

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou made history by picking up the Manager of the Month award.
