Tottenham admin shares official Son Heung-min post as he waves goodbye

Son Heung-min has likely made his last ever appearance in a Tottenham shirt.

The winger captained the side to a 1-1 draw on Sunday (3 August) against Premier League opposition Newcastle United, and was in tears as he was substituted in the second half.

Son confirmed on Saturday (2 August) that he would be leaving Spurs this summer, after nearly a decade in North London.

MLS side Los Angeles FC are thought to be the most likely destination for the 33-year-old, who has already rejected interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Tottenham share message as winger says goodbye

Brennan Johnson would open the scoring against Newcastle, but Harvey Barnes’ equaliser would mean that Son was unable to mark his final appearance with a win.

Players from both teams gathered to give the South Korean a guard of honour as he was substituted, with the forward in tears as he exited the pitch.

Son joined Spurs in 2015, arriving as a fresh-faced winger who had enjoyed a good Bundesliga season for Bayer Leverkusen.

It would take just one season of adaptation for the winger to start registering consistently brilliant numbers in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in his second campaign.

Son will go down in Spurs history

And today, Son is recognised as one of Spurs’ best-ever league performers, sitting second in their list of top Premier League scorers and providing 77 assists along the way.

Whilst the winger’s numbers were good again last season, he explained to the media that he is keen for a new experience as his career enters its twilight years.

Spurs took to social media as Son waved goodbye on his walk to the touchline, writing: “Cheers Son’s crying, nice one.”

The comment is a reference to a joke shared among football fans.

Son will leave big shoes to fill

Son was named Tottenham captain in 2023, but his leadership over the squad could be seen for years before that.

The winger has shown incredible dedication in Lilywhite, appearing in more than 30 Premier League games in each of the last nine seasons.

And whilst on paper, Son’s numbers are already incredible, it takes a slightly deeper look to see just how many of those contributions came in big games, and proved to be crucial.

Thomas Frank will now be forced to pick a captain ready to replicate that impact.
