Thomas Frank in complete shock after what he’s told about Cristian Romero at Tottenham
Cristian Romero has had a chaotic few weeks at Tottenham and a new reveal about the Argentine has shocked manager Thomas Frank.
Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United on Saturday, but the main talking point from the game was the centre-back’s second red card of the season.
Romero was dismissed for a studs-up challenge on Casemiro after just 29 minutes, while the contest was still goalless.
Spurs went behind just 10 minutes after the sending off, with Bryan Mbeumo opening the scoring, before Bruno Fernandes added a second late on.
Cristian Romero’s red card record surprises Thomas Frank
Frank is now under yet more pressure at Tottenham following their seventh Premier League game without a win.
The North London side are just six points clear of the relegation zone as it stands, and an unthinkable drop down to the Championship is becoming more realistic by the week.
Romero’s recent antics have done little to help Frank, and the post-match press conference after defeat to Man United was the source of further embarrassment for the Dane.
When the Tottenham boss was asked about his captain’s red card record, he immediately leapt to his defence, insisting that the Argentine hadn’t been dismissed too many times.
Frank said: “If you look at how many red cards he has had, it’s not like he has had that many throughout his career.”
The former Brentford boss was then informed that Romero has been sent off six times across all competitions since signing for Spurs in the summer of 2021, more than any other Premier League player.
Frank initially questioned the statistic, saying: “At the club, yeah, but not in the Premier League,” before being told again that Romero had in fact been dismissed more than any other top-flight player in that period.
The Dane then said: “Of Premier League players? OK, I didn’t know that.”
Cristian Romero giving Thomas Frank big headache
Earlier this week, Romero seemed to criticise the Tottenham hierarchy for the second time in a month on social media, after revealing his anger at the higher-ups after defeat to Bournemouth back in January.
This time, the 27-year-old highlighted the lack of options Spurs had available, labelling it a disgrace that there were only 11 fit senior players for their game against Manchester City.
However, Romero has just made the situation much worse, as he is now suspended for four games.
The centre-back won’t return until the middle of March against Liverpool, and will miss the North London derby that is scheduled for 22 February.
Frank is already in a whole world of trouble at Spurs, and Romero’s actions have left him even closer to the sack.
