Son Heung-min won’t join Tottenham stars on flight back to London as big reveal emerges

Son Heung-min’s decision to leave Tottenham has caught plenty of attention over the last few days.

The 33-year-old has spent the last decade at the heart of the team for the Lilywhites, but he will now be pulling on a new shirt during the 2025/26 campaign.

Son’s future at Tottenham had been up in the air for several months, but it has now reached a definitive conclusion, and it could have major consequences.

Thomas Frank will now be left to pick up the pieces and appoint a new club captain, as the veteran attacker lines up his next move.

Son to stay in Seoul rather of flying back to the UK with Tottenham

Son’s popularity in East Asia was central to Spurs’ pre-season tour, but now that they have played their game of the trip, it is no surprise to see that the forward has reached a swift decision.

The South Korean has been in talks with MLS side LAFC over a potential move stateside, and those discussions have seemingly been progressing at a steady rate.

There has been plenty of speculation as to where his future may lie, and he has now made a crucial immediate decision.

Son will not be flying back to the UK with the rest of his Tottenham teammates, and has instead chosen to remain in Seoul, according to journalist Sungmo Lee via X (3 August).

His decision to call time on his stint in N17 has been an emotional one for everybody connected to Spurs, and the star now seems keen to detach himself from the club as quickly as possible.

Son decision is an early blow for Frank

Son’s influence at Spurs may have waned somewhat over the last few seasons, but his decision to depart will still serve as a major blow for Frank.

As a new manager, he would have been keen to lean on the key figures within the squad, but he has lost the man who was perhaps the most well-respected among his peers.

Without the skipper, he now faces the unenviable decision of having to name a new club captain, and that could be a call which ultimately comes to define his reign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Dane has a reputation for being switched on and attuned as a boss, and he undoubtedly will have already had a plan in place for the event of Son’s departure, but it is still sure to be a situation he would rather not have faced.

With their star man now gone, the sense that Spurs are moving into a new era has only become stronger, and it is now up to Frank to ensure that it gets off to a positive start.
