Shearer sends six-word message as Tottenham sack Postecoglou – ‘Stupid’
Alan Shearer has issued a strong response to Tottenham’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham announced their decision to sack Postecoglou on Friday (6 June).
Postecoglou guided Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League. However, the Australian also set an unwanted record domestically, with Spurs becoming the first team to suffer 22 defeats without facing relegation from the Premier League.
The Lilywhites ended their campaign 17th with 38 points, and it appears this was too much for Daniel Levy to ignore, leading to Postecoglou being sacked.
The news has dominated the headlines, and Shearer has been quick to express his thoughts.

Shearer blasts Tottenham’s decision to sack Postecoglou
Levy will be convinced that the decision to sack Postecoglou was well-thought-out.
However, the choice comes with its drawbacks, with Tottenham expected to pay a substantial fee to the Australian as well as for a new coach.
| Premier League 2024/25 | MP | W | D | L | Pts |
| 17. Tottenham | 38 | 11 | 5 | 22 | 38 |
But the ends seem to justify the means for Levy, who hopes Spurs will be more competitive in the Premier League next season.
However, many disagree with the decision to sack Postecoglou, including Shearer.
The Newcastle legend wrote on X (6 June), “What a stupid game football is”.
The decision to sack Postecoglou seems inconceivable to many after the 59-year-old ended Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought.
Tottenham will look to replace Postecoglou with Thomas Frank
Levy launched his succession plan to replace Postecoglou long before the Premier League ended.
Frank has emerged as the favourite to take over at Tottenham after a successful season with Brentford.
The Bees finished 10th in the league with 56 points, 18 more than Spurs.
The Dane is often praised for his man-management and ability to get the best from his players. This would complement Tottenham well, where several young talents are coming through and will need direction.
Despite this, the loss of Postecoglou could have devastating effects on Tottenham, who have come so far with him. The players and supporters ran to the 59-year-old’s corner once he won the Europa League.
The former Tottenham boss even said he would be open to a season three. But unfortunately, like all good TV shows, the best are always cut short.
