Shearer reacts to Tottenham and Man Utd prediction after Lineker’s ‘Rut’ verdict
Alan Shearer has agreed with Gary Lineker that Tottenham are a better side than Manchester United this season.
Both sides have had seasons well below what is expected of them this term and they sit two points apart in the table with Manchester United 13th with 26 points and the Lilywhites 15th with 24 points.
With half a season left to play, Ange Postecoglou will need to find form with his side as the pressure continues to mount on the Australian.
However, when asked on The Rest is Football Podcast (22 January) which side are closer to moving in the right direction, Lineker admitted: “I think if you had everyone fit that Tottenham are in a better place than possibly Manchester United and I think if I look at the overall squad, I think they’ve probably got a little bit more than United and United need to do more in the transfer market.
“But obviously both of them are in a bit of a rut at present.”
Shearer echoed these comments as he replied: “Yeah, I wouldn’t disagree with that I don’t think. No, I’d go along with that.
“When, or if, they ever get their players back to fitness Tottenham then yeah, slightly better than Manchester United, Tottenham.”
Ange Postecoglou needs to turn things around at Tottenham
You can see why there is some sympathy for Postecoglou at Spurs this season given his squad have suffered from a high number of injuries that have kept a number of crucial first-team players unavailable.
Furthermore, in comparison to the Red Devils, they probably are in a better place and have the ability to finish higher than them in the Premier League this term.
However, it does not mean that the manager should be excused of all criticism as being better than Manchester United this season is still nowhere near the levels expected in North London.

Postecoglou’s side have been inconsistent throughout the campaign and even when they had a fully fit squad, they were losing games and conceding weak goals so there is a bigger picture to be fixed.
Daniel Levy appears to be sticking by his appointment for now but if things don’t improve soon, the boss will surely run out of excuses he can use to defend the Lilywhite’s poor form.
In other Tottenham news, Michael Dawson’s mind was blown by how “unacceptable” this Spurs player’s performance was against Everton.
