Scott Parker to Tottenham bombshell drops hours before Liverpool showdown

Tottenham’s managerial hunt has taken another twist as Scott Parker continues to be linked with the job.

Despite there being no current vacancy, Ange Postecoglou is still expected to be sacked by Tottenham.

The Australian is on track to lead Spurs to their worst-ever Premier League finish, with 17th looking a real possibility.

Despite there being potential for Europa League success, this is deemed not to be enough for Postecoglou to keep his job at the end of the campaign.

Therefore, multiple managers have been linked with the position, and most recently, Burnley’s Parker.

Parker’s interest in the Tottenham job evaluated

Parker has had an indifferent start to his managerial career. The former Spurs star has overseen three promotions to the Premier League but is yet to cement himself as a top-flight manager.

Instead, he is seen as a Championship specialist, with Parker guiding Burnley to an instant return to the Premier League on Easter Monday.

This has caught the attention of Spurs, as they draw up a shortlist of managers who could take over Postecoglou after a poor campaign.

Scott Parker’s win percentage at every club
Fulham35.24 per cent
Bournemouth50.91 per cent
Club Brugge 16.67 per cent
Burnley 59.18 per cent
Parker has become a Championship specialist

Tottenham fans are already divided over the links to Parker, with many seeing him as a potential yes man.

However, this has not stopped Parker from being interested in the job, with EFL specialist David Prutton believing that the position will “pique his interest”.

“He certainly has got unfinished business in the Premier League,” Prutton told Football League World (27 April).

“He’s done a wonderful job – three promotions to the Premier League from the Championship – not to be sniffed at. He is a remarkable coach, a great motivator, a great gauger of emotion, both in his players and himself, and the defensive set-up he has created at Burnley is staggering to see.

“I don’t know what helps Spurs, what ‘fixes’ Spurs, because several coaches have gone in and they haven’t been able to scratch. There is that link with Scott being a former player, which would endear him to the fans for that initial honeymoon period. After that, they have got to be able to perform.

“He has done a wonderful job at Burnley and deserves a chance to give it a crack with them. But, as we know, a manager’s tenure is short, and lifespans can be over quite quickly.

“It is one that I think would pique the interest of Scott, given how ambitious he is.”

Parker to Tottenham would be an underwhelming appointment

It would be hard to see how fans would get behind Parker if he were appointed.

The manager has been extremely underwhelming in the Premier League, with his last game in the English top-flight being a 9-0 defeat to Liverpool.

In his first job, he also managed to get Fulham relegated from the Premier League, despite the squad boasting numerous players who would go on to have highly successful careers.

Realistically, given the problems Tottenham currently has, the job would likely be too much for the Englishman.

The North London club needs a top manager with proper experience of top-flight football if they are to return to Europe on a regular basis.

Hopefully, the board can get the appointment right if Postecoglou is to go to help Spurs climb back up the table.
