Richard Keys scoffs at what he heard about Tottenham v Liverpool – ‘Awful’

Richard Keys has hit out at what he heard about Tottenham before their Premier League trip to Liverpool on Sunday.

Liverpool clinched the Premier League title in style, as they thrashed Spurs 5-1 at Anfield on 27 April, courtesy of goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, and an own goal from Destiny Udogie.

Tottenham silenced the Anfield crowd for a brief moment after Dominic Solanke put them in front with a header 12 minutes after kick-off, sparking momentary talk of an upset in L4.

However, it only took the Merseyside-based club four minutes to draw level and another eight minutes to take the lead.

Keys mocks pundits over Tottenham claim

Reacting to how events unfolded at Anfield on Sunday, Keys suggested that pundits and journalists made themselves look silly by expecting anything but a Liverpool win.

The former Sky Sports commentator also scoffed at how many talked up the possibility of Tottenham causing a shock upset over the Reds at Anfield.

He went on to issue a reminder about Spurs’ hopelessness, describing them as ’embarrassing’.

Keys also claimed that he was wrong to think Manchester United were the worst team he would watch in action on Sunday, with Ange Postecoglou’s side faring worse.

However, he then used an expletive to explain both teams’ current situation before dubbing them both ‘awful’.

“I smiled as I listened to commentators and reporters talk about ‘ifs and maybes’ before the game”, Keys wrote in a column on his personal website (28 April).

“They tried to crank up the drama when Solanke scored, but there was never a doubt.

“It was Tottenham lads. They were hopeless. Embarrassing.

“I’d just watched United. I didn’t think I’d see a worse team than them Sunday afternoon, but I was wrong.

“Having thought about it for a moment – maybe I’m not.”

Spurs turn attention to UEFA Europa League

As humiliating as Keys’ comments are, Tottenham cannot have any complaints about it, as they have been so poor this season.

It is worth noting that the North London giants have lost 19 games in the Premier League this season, which is only two fewer than Ipswich, who are confirmed to be dropping down to the Championship.

Postecoglou is facing the sack at Spurs regardless of whether he leads them to UEFA Europa League glory due to how bad the domestic campaign has been.

Nevertheless, he will look to redeem himself by going all the way in the Europa League, where Tottenham face Bodo/Glimt in the semi-final.
