Richard Keys rages at ‘unacceptable’ incident in Tottenham win v Southampton

Ange Postecoglou’s side beat Southampton 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in a match which wasn’t short of drama.

Tensions were high in North London ahead of kick-off on 6 April as hundreds of Spurs supporters took to the streets to protest against Daniel Levy and ENIC.

Anything other than a win would have been unacceptable. Therefore, Postecoglou took a big risk by leaving one key Tottenham player on the bench against the Saints.

However, in the end, Brennan Johnson inspired Tottenham to victory, which confirmed Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

Johnson scored twice and won the penalty which was converted by Mathys Tel in the closing moments of the match as the Frenchman netted his first Premier League goal.

However, there was one moment much earlier in the contest which left Richard Keys fuming.

Lucas Bergvall goal ruled out after a lengthy VAR check

Before Johnson grabbed his second of the afternoon, Lucas Bergvall had the ball in the back of the net.

However, the 19-year-old saw his first Premier League goal chalked off after a lengthy VAR check, with Cristian Romero adjudged to have been offside in the build-up to the goal as the Premier League made an official announcement about the incident.

It took an astonishing 4 minutes and 50 seconds for VAR to rule that the goal should be disallowed, an amount of time which left Keys fuming.

The presenter took to his personal X account on Sunday (6 April) and wrote, “They are destroying our game – 4 minutes and 50 seconds to disallow Tottenham’s second goal. This just isn’t acceptable.”

Tottenham build momentum ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt clash

Luckily for Postecoglou and his players, Bergvall’s disallowed goal didn’t mean much in the context of the match against Southampton.

The North London side were still able to claim victory and build some momentum ahead of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (10 April).
