Rangers next manager: Tottenham coach in shock running for Ibrox job
Tottenham Hotspur could be set to lose one of their longest-serving coaches amid Rangers’ hunt for a new permanent manager.
Rangers are back on the managerial merry-go-round for a third straight season after parting ways with Philippe Clement, despite the Belgian producing impressive results in the Europa League.
One of those results saw Rangers go toe-to-toe with Tottenham in December, forcing them into a late fightback as Dejan Kulusevski’s strike rescued a 1-1 draw after Spurs were outplayed for large periods.
With Clement sacked, however, multiple managers both in and out of work have been linked with filling the vacancy at Ibrox, and one of Ange Postecoglou’s staff could be heading over the Scottish border.

Ryan Mason mooted as outsider to take Rangers role
Rangers’ managerial vacancy is only a matter of days old, but there’s already been dozens of names linked with taking up the mantle, including former Tottenham player and current coach Ryan Mason.
Interim Tenure | Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Win percentage |
20 April – 30 June 2021 | 7 | 4 | 0 | 3 | 57.1 per cent |
24 April – 6 June 2023 | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 33.3 per cent |
According to Oddschecker (2 March), Mason, a member of Postecoglou’s six-coach team of assistants, is rated at 33/1 by Bet365 to be appointed at Ibrox, level with current interim assistant Neil McCann.
While Mason is in the running, he’s a long way back in the odds, with his chances the joint–20th shortest odds in a list which is headed by Russell Martin and former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Tottenham unlikely to lose Ryan Mason to Rangers
Although Mason’s coaching credentials are strong enough to have seen him take interim charge of Spurs on two occasions in 2021 and 2023, the chances of him heading north to Ibrox are slim to say the least.
Being level with eight other managers on 33/1 odds to take the job leaves him nowhere near the front-runners, with the likes of Sean Dyche and current interim boss Barry Ferguson firmly ahead of Mason.
Postecoglou certainly wouldn’t take kindly to losing Mason north of the border – particularly to a club in Rangers whom he went toe-to-toe with in the Scottish Premiership during his time at Celtic.
Mason was stepping into the breaches left by Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte while Postecoglou was lifting title after title in Glasgow, and if he had been part of the Australian’s staff at Celtic Park, there’s not a chance he’d even contemplate a move to Ibrox.
