Premier League release official statement after Liverpool v Tottenham incident
Liverpool and Tottenham’s Premier League clash was full of incidents in the first half, with the Premier League releasing an official statement about one particular moment.
Spurs arrived at Anfield on Sunday (27 April) with nothing left to play for in the Premier League, and all eyes on the UEFA Europa League, with the first leg of the Lilywhites’ semi-final against Bodø/Glimt to come at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (1 May).
As a result, Ange Postecoglou did something no Tottenham manager has done before with his lineup as the Australian made wholesale changes.
However, this came back to haunt the visitors, with Liverpool running riot in an action-packed first half and the Premier League releasing a statement about one moment.

Premier League make statement as VAR overturn Diaz decision
Postecoglou made the surprise decision to leave Richarlison on the bench, although this was justified as Dominic Solanke opened the scoring at Anfield.
However, Liverpool quickly turned things around and took a commanding lead before half-time with goals through Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo.
Premier League 2024/25 | Position | Points | Played |
Liverpool | 1st | 82 | 34 |
Arsenal | 2nd | 67 | 34 |
Diaz’s equaliser was initially ruled out, with Dominik Szoboszlai adjudged to have been offside.
However, this decision was quickly overturned by VAR, with the Premier League writing via the PLMatchCentre on X (27 April), “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for Liverpool – and determined that Szoboszlai was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded.”
Postecoglou will be keen to leave Anfield unscathed
Any chances of a Tottenham victory now seem long gone.
Therefore, while Postecoglou will no doubt be encouraging his players to give it their all in the second half, the main thing for the Lilywhites now is leaving Merseyside with no fresh injury concerns.
Win, lose or draw against Liverpool, it means nothing in the context of Spurs’ season, and while Postecoglou will be keen to prevent the scoreline becoming embarrassing, the priority will be keeping his players fresh for the Europa League semi-final.
