Premier League called out after Everton v Tottenham error

Rob Wotton called out the Premier League for failing to implement a VAR check when Son Heung-min was seemingly fouled in the box for Tottenham in their defeat to Everton.

Tottenham fell to a 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday (19 January), which was the Toffees’ first league victory since the start of December and Spurs’ sixth game in a row without a win.

It piled further pressure on the future of Ange Postecoglou but the defeat didn’t come without controversy, with Spurs potentially hard done by when Son appeared to be fouled by Jarrad Branthwaite in the box but no penalty was awarded.

Speaking on Sky Sports News [20 January, 11:16am], Dermot Gallagher, an ex-Premier League official, said: “It’s clumsy because he doesn’t get the ball.

“The interesting thing is that the ref is looking at his assistant, who signals no. VAR doesn’t get involved because Son comes across [Branthwaite]. If he hadn’t then VAR may have got involved.

“I’d have given a penalty. It’s clumsy and he doesn’t get the ball.”

After pundits Sue Smith and Stephen Warnock also agreed it should have been a penalty, Wotton replied: “So this is clear and obvious. Then why didn’t VAR recommend a review?”

Ange Postecoglou time surely up at Tottenham

Postecoglou appears to be a defeated man and his comments made after the game certainly showed signs of that after he hit back at a very appropriate claim by a reporter.

Spurs just look lost under his stewardship and, while you can use the injuries to back up his side of the debate, his inability to adapt to the situation is predominantly what is causing the rapid regression.

Things need to change as a matter of urgency and there are very few indications that he is the man capable of implementing that change anytime soon.

While on the face of it it seems unlikely, there is an outside chance that Tottenham could find themselves in a genuine relegation battle if performances and results continue the way they are.
