Postecoglou ‘set to drop Son’ as Tottenham claim made ahead of Chelsea game
Ange Postecoglou could drop captain Son Heung-min as Tottenham prepare for a tricky week of football.
Tottenham have had a terrible season domestically, sitting 14th in the Premier League table with just 34 points.
With the hope of resuming the Premier League campaign on a positive note, Tottenham face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a London derby on Thursday (3 April).
Following the London derby, Postecoglou has to prepare for a game against relegation-threatened Southampton and then the UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Postecoglou to drop Son
Tottenham have struggled to turn up in big games and have also missed key players because of injury. The footballing gods have not been in favour of Spurs as they have had a number of injury concerns, especially in the attack.
Strikers Dominic Solanke and Richarlison have missed 40 games collectively this season, while Dejan Kulusevski has also remained on the sidelines with a foot injury.
Postecoglou would want to avoid any injury setbacks ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt, which is the most important game for Spurs this season.

If the Lilywhites manage to advance and win the Europa League, they will end their 16-year wait for a major trophy and in turn also help Postecoglou save his job. However, before the game against the German side, Spurs have a home league match against Southampton.
With Tottenham being miles ahead of Southampton in terms of quality on paper, Postecoglou could heavily rotate his side to protect key players ahead of the Europa League tie.
According to The Standard (3 April), Postecoglou could drop Son from the lineup against the Saints while also resting James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

All or nothing for Tottenham in Europa League
Spurs’ season hinges on their performance in the Europa League. They managed to secure a quarter-final spot by eliminating AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. However, it was not a solid performance by the Lilywhites.
Pressure is mounting on Postecoglou and if he has to save his job, he must deliver the Europa League trophy for Tottenham.
Winning the Europa League is the only way that Spurs can guarantee European football next season, which is the bare minimum goal set by Daniel Levy.
If that means resting Son and the others against a poor Southampton side, then so be it.
