Postecoglou sack: Micah Richards reveals Tottenham excuse after Everton shock

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou should not be sacked after the 3-2 loss at Everton on Sunday, Micah Richards has said.

The pressure on the Australian is at an all-time high after a disappointing defeat at Goodison Park on 19 January, despite their shocking recent form.

His side have now won just one of their last 10 league games and the former Celtic boss is under intense scrutiny at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast (20 January, 22:45), Richards believes that the Australian should be given more time, saying: “I do give him an excuse because of the injuries, if it was the same 11 that started the season now and they gel together, they knew the system, they knew exactly what they wanted to do.

“But he is constantly having to change it and I think for any manager for the cohesion, for the chemistry you need that and he’s not got that at this moment in time.

“It’s very difficult for me to say, ‘well, the players are not buying in’, I just think they’re sort of learning as they are going along and he’s finding it very difficult to get his message across to players who are not or wouldn’t normally be starters.”

Should Tottenham sack Ange Postecoglou?

The Lilywhites are in 15th place in the Premier League with 24 points after 22 matches, which is frankly, not acceptable for a club of this stature.

As a result, Postecoglou is under severe pressure to keep his job in North London, but is that scrutiny deserved?

Well, the Spurs boss has had to deal with a difficult injury crisis in which key defensive starters such as Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie have been out for a significant period.

That has required the Australian to utilise Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray, who is naturally a central midfielder as his centre-back partnership and Djed Spence, who was out in the cold, as a makeshift left-back.

However, Postecoglou has not helped the situation by refusing to abandon his high-line, attacking style of play despite a major injury crisis.

If he is given his marching orders, he can have no complaints given the stubborn nature of his tactical decisions.
