Postecoglou ‘out of excuses’ at Tottenham as Thomas Frank appointment claim made

Henry Winter has had his say on Ange Postecoglou with plenty of pressure on the Tottenham boss after a 2-0 loss against Fulham.

Although the Lilywhites came back from behind against AZ Alkmaar to progress in the Europa League on Thursday (13 March), Spurs could not back up their result on Sunday (16 March).

It took until the 78th minute for the deadlock to be broken, but once they got going, Fulham were able to score twice and send Tottenham back to North London without any points.

Winter offers Postecoglou assessment

It has been a disastrous season for Tottenham as they sit 14th in the Premier League, miles away from where the Lilywhites are expected to be.

As a result, there have been questions over Postecoglou’s abilities for some time now, but Europa League progression seems to have kept him in a job.

It proved to be another week of European success, coming out on top against Alkmaar to get through to the next stage of the competition.

However, dropping a place in the Premier League table shows that not everything is rosy.

It is yet to be seen whether Daniel Levy is close to parting ways with the Australian, although Mauricio Pochettino already putting his interest in there could sway a decision.

Although injuries have been used as a reason for struggles throughout the campaign so far, with players regaining fitness it’s left fewer excuses to be used.

Writing on his blog (17 March), renowned journalist Winter admitted he thinks Postecoglou has run out of steam as he said: “Brentford’s clever, personable head coach, Thomas Frank, would do a better job at Tottenham Hotspur than Ange Postecoglou. Fulham’s Marco Silva would do a better job. So would many others.

“Spurs continue to drift further into mediocrity under Postecoglou. Maybe form will turn when his injured players are all back and have regained match fitness. But, really, Postecoglou has run out of excuses. With every utterance, he runs out of credibility. He risks becoming a divisive figure at Spurs, setting fans against each other.

“Spurs need to target the right coach to succeed Postecoglou in the summer, and work more broadly on getting the balance between better style and substance.”

Tottenham need a big change in the summer

As Winter says, it is hard to see Postecoglou being the man who can take Tottenham forward to success on a long-term basis. The boss may have had issues but he struggles to adapt and his stubbornness is often a downfall.

That being said, his side are on track for a chance at winning the Europa League currently and while that would not save the season, it would at least deliver the trophy that Spurs have been dreaming about for a long time.

Tottenham in the Premier League this season.

There are plenty of issues at Tottenham and many of them run much further than just the manager, with Levy having plenty of questions to answer for Tottenham supporters.

To see real success delivered in North London, there has to be a complete culture change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with new faces involved in that.

Levy may well hold on until the end of the season but the summer transfer window must bring change both on and off the pitch for a more optimistic future.
