Marco Silva set to sign contract amid £7.5m Tottenham hire development

Marco Silva has been one of the leading candidates to become Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager as pressure grows on Ange Postecoglou.

Silva’s Fulham have been showing Spurs the way to go this season, and currently sit 11 points clear of Tottenham in the Premier League table following a 2-0 win over Postecoglou’s side on 16 March.

Fulham’s form as the leading London team wearing white this term leaves them in eighth and just two points outside a European place; a far cry from Spurs’ current plight of 14th position on just 34 points.

Tottenham do still have a chance to book their spot on the continent next season but can only do so by winning the Europa League, with their poor domestic form leaving Postecoglou on the brink of the sack.

Marco Silva to sign new contract away from Tottenham

With Postecoglou’s long-term future at Tottenham looking untenable, Daniel Levy and other higher-ups in North London have already sought out potential replacements, with Silva near the top of the billing.

However, the Sunday Mirror have reported in their print edition (23 March, page 70) that Silva looks set to sign a new deal with Fulham, who are confident that the Portuguese will stay put at Craven Cottage.

Silva’s current contract includes a £7.5million release clause which has been off-putting for Spurs and interested sides in Saudi Arabia, and it remains to be seen if his new deal will include something similar.

Tottenham to turn elsewhere for Postecoglou replacement

Given Silva’s hefty release clause has already seen Daniel Levy baulk at a mid-season hire, the prospect of him signing a new contract – potentially with an even bigger break clause – likely leaves any deal dead.

Silva’s Fulham are no fluke when it comes to their league position and performances – as Tottenham found out before the international break – and it’s no surprise that they’re desperate to keep hold of him.

Postecoglou winning the Europa League, and sealing direct qualification for the Champions League, may prove to be enough for the Australian to save his job, but it’s clear this season has been one to forget.

Levy faces a huge summer of decisions to get Tottenham back to the top on a domestic front, and with the likes of Andoni Iraola also flying high, it’s unclear how much pulling power the Lilywhites will have.
