Marco Silva on verge of Tottenham agreement in shock manager twist

Tottenham are scrambling to quickly appoint a successor to Ange Postecoglou.

As announced on Friday (6 June), Postecoglou has been sacked after just two years in charge in North London, with Tottenham pointing to the Australian’s poor record in the Premier League as the determining factor.

Chief Football Officer Scott Munn has reportedly followed the 59-year-old out of the door, while it remains to be seen what effect this decision will have on key members of the playing group.

Sacking Postecoglou has caused unrest in North London, with a plethora of candidates being discussed within the club as Daniel Levy looks to appease the disgruntled fanbase as quickly as possible.

Marco Silva has now taken over as the front runner in a late twist that could see the Portuguese manager step into the Tottenham dugout shortly.

Marco Silva very close to reaching an agreement with Spurs

A list of candidates to take over at Tottenham had emerged long before the official announcement that Postecoglou had been sacked was made, with Silva one of the favourites from the off.

The hierarchy in North London have put Premier League experience as a prerequisite for their next appointment after finishing the season on a record-low 38 points, just one spot above relegation.

Silva’s all-time Premier League record

The Fulham boss has ample knowledge of the English top flight, having first got a taste of it during his stint at Hull City back in 2017.

Since then, Silva has gone on to forge a commendable career, especially in his most recent spell in West London, where he has transformed Fulham into a formidable outfit despite financial constraints.

Tottenham have been impressed by his progress, and as reported in the Portuguese paper Record (7 June), Silva is now very close to reaching an agreement with Spurs.

This will come as a shock to most, with Brentford’s Thomas Frank widely reported to be in pole position to replace Postecoglou.

Silva appointment may fall flat with fanbase

Tottenham’s quest to stabilise after a rollercoaster two years under Postecoglou makes the appointment of Silva perfectly reasonable.

The former Everton manager would instil a hard work ethic in the squad and would likely steady the ship. However, he may not capture the imagination of the Lilywhites.

Silva’s charisma does not match Postecoglou’s, nor does his pragmatic style of play lean towards excitement, which could make life difficult for the 47-year-old if he does not make a good start at Tottenham.
