Man City new manager: Ex-Tottenham boss in running after Guardiola sack decision

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino could be in the running for the Manchester City job if Pep Guardiola leaves, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast (24 December) that Guardiola could resign if the Citizens’ poor run of form continues.

The Argentine is an outsider to take over from the Spaniard if he does decide to walk away, he is priced at 20/1 with Sky Bet and William Hill and 25/1 with BetVictor. [Oddschecker, 31 December]

Girona boss Michel and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso are joint favourites to succeed Guardiola with most oddsmakers’, at odds of around 3/1.

Former Tottenham man Pochettino unlikely to join City

The former Spurs manager would be a solid appointment at the Etihad Stadium if Guardiola does decide to leave or is sacked.

He took Spurs to a Champions League final in the 2018/19 season where they were defeated by Liverpool and is very highly regarded in the game despite a disappointing stint at Chelsea.

However, he has just started a role with the United States national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which is primarily going to be hosted there, as well as Mexico and Canada.

City are currently 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool and have won just two of their last 14 matches in all competitions including two losses to Spurs but Guardiola is unlikely to leave the defending champions no matter how bad it gets.

He will be given the chance to freshen up the squad in January and could well turn their fortunes around with a few big-money additions.

The chances of him being replaced at this stage, especially by Pochettino, who has just started in a new role, are very unlikely.
