Maddison speaks out after public Postecoglou comments at Tottenham – ‘We knew…’

James Maddison has made a strong assertion about Ange Postecoglou, days after he led Tottenham to a UEFA Europa League triumph.

Postecoglou ended a 17-year trophy drought at Tottenham with a 1-0 victory in the Europa League against Manchester United at the Estadio de San Mamés last Wednesday (21 May).

However, he oversaw Spurs’ worst-ever Premier League campaign, ending the season 17th after a 4-1 defeat to Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Now, Maddison has reacted to a high-profile public comment issued by the Tottenham boss to him and the rest of his teammates.

Maddison reacts to Postecoglou’s ‘second season’ assertion

Postecoglou has not escaped the uncertainties surrounding his future despite delivering Tottenham the Europa League.

Indeed, his terrible Premier League form has remained present in Daniel Levy’s mind, as he continues to deliberate over his future at the North London club.

Tottenham struggled in the Premier League this season.

However, even during his lowest points in the season, Maddison backed the Australian coach to deliver the trophy he promised in his second season.

In an interview with Sky Sports (27 May), when asked about Postecoglou’s assertion, he said: “Even at the start of the season when saying ‘I don’t usually win things, I always win things’, we knew that would create a big uproar in the media.

“But to be fair, never once did I stop believing he meant that.”

Postecoglou should be given a few more months at Tottenham

While Postecoglou was unsuccessful in the Premier League, he has proved he has what it takes to win at Tottenham – something few managers have been able to do.

As well as this, the current Spurs coach seems to have formed a close bond with each player in his team who have all entrusted him to deliver on the biggest stages.

If Levy were to sack Postecoglou now, he runs the risk of driving others out of the club with him, which would leave a bigger mess than what he started with.

While the time is running out for the Tottenham chairman, he must consider all outcomes before committing to a decision.
