Liverpool appeal unsuccessful after Curtis Jones red card against Tottenham

Curtis Jones is set to sit out three Premier League matches following his red card against Tottenham as Liverpool’s appeal against the decision has proved unsuccessful, it has been confirmed.

Jones was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for his challenge on Yves Bissouma at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (30 September) during the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Spurs.

Jurgen Klopp’s men would go on to finish the game with nine men following Diogo Jota’s second-half dismissal for two bookable offences.

Liverpool confirmed via their official X account on Tuesday (3 October) that Jones is now due to serve a three-match ban, meaning he’ll miss upcoming games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News:

“When I hear experienced experts say that Jones slipped when his foot went on top of the ball, listen we played the game we know how this works, he could have broken Bissouma’s ankle, end of story.

“Whether it was a late tackle or he mistimed it, hard luck, he could have done the Spurs player serious damage.

“I found it very weird that Liverpool appealed the decision, it is a waste of time. Jurgen Klopp says he feels hard done by, but it is history, move on.

“I mean if Liverpool can appeal against a challenge like that when he launched himself into the tackle, and then where his boot ended up, there is no argument that it was a dangerous challenge which could have caused an injury.”
