Lionel Messi reacts to wild Tottenham scenes
Lionel Messi was privy to wild scenes surrounding Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League victory.
From the final whistle in Bilbao to the aftermath of their 4-1 defeat to Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (25 May), Spurs’ Europa League triumph has been discussed across the globe.
Spurs had defied all odds to deliver on Ange Postecoglou’s promise of silverware in his second season, beating Manchester United 1-0 at the Estadio de San Mamés (21 May) to lift their first European trophy in 41 years.
The remarkable achievement is even more intriguing given that Tottenham have simultaneously broken multiple records with their abysmal form in the Premier League.
The news, and subsequent mix of emotion and disbelief, even reached the greatest player of all time, who took to social media to react.

Messi likes Cristian Romero’s celebration post
Messi, now playing his football in America, has often spoken of his admiration for compatriot Romero, previously describing him as the best defender in the world.
The Barcelona legend is not the only one to admire the centre back, with Postecoglou urging Spurs to repel any offers they may receive for the Argentine, who is widely linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.
Team | Games | Wins | Draws | Losses |
With Romero | 26 | 13 | 3 | 10 |
Without Romero | 34 | 13 | 5 | 16 |
Romero’s mind may already be made up, but the defender nevertheless posted images via his Instagram (24 May) of Spurs’ trophy parade on Friday (23 May), writing “London is” next to a white heart emoji.
This post was liked by Messi, much to the excitement of Tottenham fans.
The Lilywhites are unanimous in wanting to keep Romero in North London, especially as the 27-year-old was voted Europa League Player of the Tournament for his contributions in the competition.
Messi’s approval is enough to prove a point to Spurs
Daniel Levy has not always seen eye to eye with Romero, and could be tempted to offload the outspoken defender for the right price.
However, it would prove to be a very unpopular decision, with players, fans, and Postecoglou all aligned in their belief that the World Cup winner is key to their side.
The fact that an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has also sung Romero’s praises should indicate to Levy that selling his prized asset could be a huge mistake.
