Levy ‘to sack Postecoglou’ after what Tottenham fans have done – Paul Merson

Daniel Levy will not hesitate to sack Ange Postecoglou to alleviate pressure from the Tottenham supporters, according to Paul Merson.

The Spurs chairman is hardly the most beloved figure in North London, with his decision-making consistently under scrutiny from the disgruntled fanbase, but all the attention is on the growing pressure on Postecoglou.

However, Merson shared his verdict on the debate live on Sky Sports News (28 January, 7:24pm) as he believes Levy will be ruthless to save his own skin while posing an intriguing question to the angry supporters.

Fans have already turned focus to Levy, aiming chants at him during recent losses, while further protests could be planned.

Merson said: “The only problem is when those Daniel Levy [Tottenham chairman] banners start coming out, there’s only one thing that’s going to happen and that’s, ‘I’m going to take the pressure off me. Off you go, manager’.

“Where would the fans rather be: sixth in the league and out of every cup? Or 15th in the league but still in every cup?”

Daniel Levy is to blame for the woes at Tottenham

The Lilywhites lost consecutive Premier League matches to relegation candidates Everton and Leicester City as the “Levy out” chants rang louder than ever.

Postecoglou has been the scapegoat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this year, but now the blame is being put on the chairman for allowing the scenes to develop without intervention.

Although esteemed pundits like Jeff Stelling believe the injuries are no excuse for dropping points against inferior opposition, the ever-growing list is mind-blowing.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Djed Spence, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson are all on the sidelines, leaving Postecoglou scrambling for options to field a starting eleven.

Furthermore, the Lilywhites are waiting to learn the extent of James Maddison’s latest setback, which could be another significant blow for the boss.

Tottenham face the prospect of travelling to Anfield for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg (6 February) with a squad stripped to the bare bones for a clash against one of the most in-form sides in Europe.

There is less than a week of the winter transfer window left, and Levy has barely moved a finger to provide Postecoglou with the squad depth he desperately needs to salvage the remainder of the season.

If no new signings arrive in North London before the 3 February deadline, the “Levy out” chants will break down the door.
