Levy ‘to be furious’ at what Postecoglou has publicly said about Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou’s time at Tottenham will be entirely defined by the result of the Europa League final.

The Australian enjoyed a dream start to life in North London, but that seems an age away as Spurs fans have lost patience with Tottenham’s woeful league form, leaving them just one place above the relegation zone.

The supporters are not the only ones who have become disillusioned with the former Celtic manager, with Daniel Levy busy seeking a replacement come the summer.

Success in the impending Europa League final could yet offer some respite, but it is unlikely to convince the club that Postecoglou is the man to hang their hat on going forward.

Postecoglou questions summer signings

Tottenham have rejigged their transfer blueprint since Postecoglou’s arrival, focusing much more on youth and potential rather than ready-made players, with the exception of Dominic Solanke.

An unprecedented injury crisis, especially in forward areas, resulted in further acquisitions being made in January; however, even then, the marquee signing was a 19-year-old in Mathys Tel.

It was a strategy that was initially adopted with the blessings of the head coach, but with the pressure mounting on Postecoglou, he pointed to that being the main factor in their recent struggles.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Europa League final on Monday (12 May), he said: “The year before I took over we were eighth and weren’t even in Europe.

“It’s not just been ‘this is the final bit’, I’ve had to do a whole lot of other things, a lot of heavy lifting in these last two years.”

He went on to add: “We signed a lot of young players with the right thinking of the future, but it’s costing us now because we don’t have a squad that can cope with what it’s going through.”

Levy does not respond well to criticism

Postecoglou is not the first man in the dugout to criticise Tottenham’s transfer policy, nor by extension Levy’s running of the club.

Jose Mourinho’s constant hidden messages and Antonio Conte’s explosion instantly come to mind, but even colleagues with whom Levy has had good relations with such as Mauricio Pochettino have questioned the club’s ambitions on the pitch.

There are two common themes within, the first of which is that with so many voices finding common ground, there must be a healthy portion of truth in their observations.

The second is far more damning in that these sorts of comments seem to come towards the end of their tenure, often resulting in decisive action from Levy.

And Levy, it is fair to say, will not be happy at all at these latest comments from Postecoglou effectively shifting the blame in his direction.
