Jamie Carragher can’t believe what he’s seen at Tottenham as ‘unbelievable’ claim made

Tottenham have been haunted by their goalscoring troubles in 2025/26, and that narrative continued on Tuesday night.

Thomas Frank was rescued by Cristian Romero’s brace to salvage a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

It isn’t the first time this season that a defender has taken responsibility, with Micky van de Ven scoring two goals at Everton to seal a 3-0 victory in October.

Spurs haven’t been helped by Dominic Solanke’s long-term injury in their attempts to become a free-flowing attack this term, but Frank has still been scrutinised for his style of football.

Jamie Carragher shares his verdict on goal-shy Tottenham

For the fourth league game running, Tottenham failed to register a shot on target in the first half against Newcastle and rarely threatened Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.

The above statistic sums up their lack of purposeful attacking play, which has ultimately led to discontent from the fans.

Spurs supporters want to see exciting, front-foot football, similar to what they saw under Ange Postecoglou, but as it stands, Frank is failing to deliver that remit.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Jamie Carragher offered his verdict on Tottenham’s issues in front of goal and was baffled that they failed to have a first-half shot on target for the fourth successive match.

“There was a stat that came in last night, it was unbelievable,” Carragher said. “In the last four first halves, Tottenham have played, they haven’t had a shot on target.

“I know they scored two and the goal record isn’t not too bad, but they had two shots and scored two goals, and I think the supporters are sort of looking a little bit deeper into more than the results, and it’s like, they don’t never look like scoring a goal.”

Tottenham failed to sign a Premier League-proven striker

Spurs have struggled with a lack of firepower this term, seeing Richarlison top the scoring charts with five goals in the top-flight.

Spurs top scorers in the Premier League
Richarlison – 5
Micky van de Ven – 3
Mohammed Kudus – 2
Joao Palhinha – 2
Cristian Romero – 2

But even so, no team with ambitions of qualifying for the Champions League should have two defenders making up their top scorers list.

It all boils down to a scattergun approach to the summer transfer window from Daniel Levy, who failed to add a Premier League-proven striker to Frank’s squad.

Of course, Solanke being injured hasn’t helped, but Mathys Tel – who joined Spurs from Bayern Munich – has scored just twice in 10 league appearances, while big-money signing Xavi Simons hasn’t registered a goal in the top-flight.
