James Maddison’s injury timeline as major Tottenham concern emerges
James Maddison’s growing injury record is becoming an increasingly big concern for Tottenham.
The attacking midfielder was unable to feature in the Lilywhites’ Europa League final victory back in May, having suffered a setback to his fitness in the latter stages of the season.
Maddison has spent consistent periods on the sidelines since his move to Spurs from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, and the Englishman is a significant miss for the N17 outfit when he is not available.
Thomas Frank would surely have been looking to hand him a central role within the squad this term, but the 28-year-old has been dealt yet another blow.

Maddison’s injury woes hit again as Frank reveals “brutal” update
Injuries have plagued Maddison’s time at Tottenham so far, and he could be set for another lengthy period on the treatment table after he was forced off in the friendly against Newcastle.
The midfielder was only 12 minutes into a cameo appearance in the second game of Spurs’ pre-season tour, when he was stretched off the pitch in what Frank has called a “brutal” moment.
The England star has now been seen walking through the Seoul World Cup Stadium on crutches, according to The Athletic’s Jay Harris via X (3 August).
- 1 May 2025 – Maddison is forced off in the 65th minute of the first leg of Spurs’ Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt
- 31 July 2025 – Maddison makes his long-awaited return by replacing Pape Sarr in the 85th minute of the pre-season win over Arsenal
- 3 August 2025 – He is now set for another lengthy layoff just days after his return to the fold
Frank’s early indication is that the injury is a serious one, and it could potentially be a recurrence of the same knee problem that kept him out of the Europa League final.
The former Coventry City man missed the final six games of last season with the issue, and was just two appearances into his return, amid what has been a carefully managed pre-season.
Maddison missed a further five games back at the end of January with a calf strain, and this is now another frustrating benchmark on an ever-growing timeline of injury problems.
Tottenham need to keep Maddison
Maddison’s difficulty in remaining fit at Tottenham has left many people questioning whether he could be sold, but that would surely be of little benefit.
The Lilywhites will certainly be frustrated with the situation, but they must do everything they can to stand by their star and provide him with whatever support is needed during his recovery process.
Season | Team | Games Missed |
2024/25 | Tottenham | 11 |
2023/24 | Tottenham | 13 |
2022/23 | Leicester City | 6 |
2021/22 | Leicester City | 2 |
2020/21 | Leicester City | 11 |
He is an outstanding talent when he is in full flow, and he can easily be the heartbeat of Spurs’ side on his day.
The temptation to cash in on him is understandable, but Daniel Levy and Co. would surely struggle to negotiate a fee that makes it worth their while, given that other clubs will be well aware of the risk they would be taking by signing him.
There is arguably little that Spurs can do in their current situation, other than continue to try to help the midfielder overcome his issues.
