James Maddison told to what to do as Roy Keane blasted for ‘harsh’ comments

Tottenham are in dire form this season and there have been many questions posed over the future of Ange Postecoglou in North London.

With the Lilywhites sitting 14th in the Premier League, there is no doubt that Spurs are underachieving.

However, with injuries throughout the Tottenham squad to key players, it has also left the boss without too many options in plenty of positions.

James Maddison is one of those names on the injury list and although supporters will be relieved by the news that he may soon be available again, Roy Keane is one man who wasn’t convinced by his ability to make an impact.

Roy Keane blasted for harsh James Maddison comments

Although Ian Wright was positive about Maddison nearing a return for Tottenham, Keane did not hold back on the Stick to Football podcast (13 February) as he argued: “Maddison isn’t bad, but if you think he’s going to come back and get Spurs top six, you’re in cuckoo land.”

However, after the clip from the podcast gained attention on social media, Spurs supporters were quick to call Keane out for his undeserving comments.

James Maddison needs to prove he can be a Tottenham star

There is no doubt that Maddison has put in some very strong performances for Tottenham since he initially signed for the Lilywhites and his abilities are very clear.

Admittedly, this season hasn’t been the best for him and Maddison has also not been helped by struggling with an injury keeping him sidelined.

Nevertheless, in 22 Premier League appearances this term, the 28-year-old has contributed eight goals and four assists which is not a bad return, especially when you consider that his whole side have been below the level expected this term.

As one of the more experienced players in the club, you can understand why some may be keen to see Maddison to step up and show more leadership, especially with young players like 18-year-old Archie Gray having been thrown in at the deep end this term.

While Postecoglou has constantly referred to the injuries facing his side this term, this certainly cannot be seen as the only reason why Tottenham find themselves where they are in the league too.

Similarly, the players cannot avoid their share of the blame and the Lilywhites probably have a number of factors contributing to why they are where they are this term.

Likewise, this even view can probably be applied to Keane’s views. He is a pundit who is known for being harsh although his comments are probably on the edge of too unfair towards Maddison given he is still the top scorer for Tottenham this term.

That being said, when he returns from injury, there is also a responsibility for the 28-year-old to show he can step up when called upon.

With this in mind, as some supporters have alluded to, Maddison should be using these comments as fuel for when he gets back on the pitch to silence his critics and prove that, despite a difficult time in North London of late, he is still very much a quality player.
