‘He’s so weak’ – Richarlison contribution eviscerated after Tottenham lose at Newcastle

Richarlison has been torn apart over his performance after Tottenham were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at Newcastle.

The Brazilian led the line for Thomas Frank at St. James’ Park on Wednesday until he was replaced by Mathys Tel after 78 minutes, but couldn’t prevent the home side continuing the defence of the trophy they won last season.

Richarlison was booked for complaining to Chris Kavanagh after Fabian Schar scored the opener with Djed Spence out of position despite having been allowed to tie his laces.

Gabby Agbonlahor was wholly unimpressed by Tottenham’s showing in defeat against Newcastle, dismissing Xavi Simons‘ contribution but reserving his harshest criticism for his teammate.

Richarlison scored twice in the win over Burnley to kick of the campaign in ideal fashion but has only scored once ever since.

According to Sofascore stats his attacking contribution amounted to four shots, three of which were on target with one blocked.

One attempt was classed as a big chance missed, while he was caught offside once, and his work in the passing game rated poorly.

In a conversation live on talkSPORT the following morning Agbonlahor complained to Alan Brazil about what he felt was the ex-Everton star’s total lack of a positive impact in the side.

The former Aston Villa forward said: “I was trying to figure which game to watch last night so I watched Spurs in the end and they were ordinary.

“Simons again, poor. Richarlison, poor. Al, he’s so weak. He spent the whole game on the floor.

“He wants to play number 10, he plays number 10, doesn’t perform. On the left, he can’t take a player on. He’s too weak, doesn’t create enough. Richarlison doesn’t hold the ball up, doesn’t really offer anything again.

“I don’t know how they’re where they are, third in the Premier League, Spurs. This month they’ve got some very tough games, starting on Saturday, Chelsea.”

Tottenham pressure may be too much for Richarlison

Richarlison blows hot and cold in a Tottenham shirt but can seemingly never get over his slow start for the club, following a big-money move from Everton.

There was a reason why Daniel Levy shelled out out on a £60 million deal in 2022 and the talismanic run, plus 10 goals, that helped keep the Toffees in the Premier League the previous season was a large part of it.

However, the 28-year-old only netted once in the league in his first campaign in North London, and although he had 11 the next year he has never proven to be consistent enough to escape criticism.

Harry Kane’s exit didn’t prevent Spurs spending big again for Dominic Solanke but the Brazilian clearly does have value.

Richarlison has proven himself as a Premier League performer in the past, and it is difficult to say he can’t handle the spotlight when his record for Brazil is pretty good, but after a rough introduction the weight of the Spurs shirt often looks too heavy.
