Harry Redknapp shocked by manager sack news ahead of Everton v Tottenham

Everton sacking Sean Dyche came as a surprise as David Moyes’ side prepare to host Tottenham on Sunday, Harry Redknapp has said.

Speaking to BetVictor (18 January), Redknapp expressed his shock at Dyche’s sudden departure from Goodison Park on 9 January, with his replacement Moyes looking for a first win against Spurs.

Redknapp added that the Lilywhites can still take no chances on Merseyside given how “poor” they were against Arsenal, and predicted a 1-1 draw for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

He said: “This is a big game for David Moyes and Everton. I still find Sean Dyche’s departure surprising, but Moyes has so much experience, I’m certain he’ll be do another good job here.

“Tottenham were poor the other night, particularly in the first half.

“For me, the big concern would be that it wasn’t a typical Spurs performance where they created a lot but were poor at the back, they didn’t even threaten the Arsenal goal. This is a big, big game for the club.

“Everton, with that fantastic crowd behind them, can frustrate and take the game to Spurs. 1-1.”

Tottenham can’t be taken by surprise v Everton

Although Moyes lost his first game back in charge of the Toffees against Aston Villa on Wednesday, it’s expected that the longer the Scot spends with his Everton squad, they’ll be harder and harder to beat.

That’s far from ideal for a Spurs side currently on a dismal run of form themselves, with just one win in nine matches and none in their last five arguably leaving Postecoglou on the brink of his own exit.

Coming up against an Everton side which has scored just 15 goals so far this season – the second-lowest in the top-flight – Spurs will hope that their evident defensive frailties aren’t exposed on Sunday.

Postecoglou is yet to bring in the new face in defence which he’s been desperately crying out for in the winter transfer window, but the Australian will still hope his side can keep Everton at arm’s length.

Redknapp is spot on in his assessment that Everton can cause Spurs problems, but with Postecoglou looking to return his Lilywhites to the winners’ circle, Sunday may provide the perfect opportunity.
