Harry Redknapp shares ‘crazy’ Djed Spence admission after Tottenham scenes

Harry Redknapp has had plenty to say about Djed Spence with the full-back having been a recent regular with Tottenham.

The former Spurs boss, who managed the side at White Hart Lane between 2008 and 2012, was naming his Team of the Week with BetVictor (18 February).

The Lilywhites managed to carve out a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday (16 February), with Spence starting at left-back as he contributed to a clean sheet to lift the spirits of this season’s dejected supporters.

Redknapp has commented plenty on Tottenham so far this season with some honest truths but an underlying hope that his former side, with whom he qualified for the Champions League in 2010, can improve their performances.

The 77-year-old has been full of praise for Spence this week after his performance following his enforced positioning at left-back over the course of this season by an injury-ravaged Ange Postecoglou.

Redknapp included Spence in his Team of the Week alongside returning goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who has been badly missed.

“Djed Spence has been a revelation in recent weeks for Spurs,” he said.

“It sounds crazy but one of the few positives of all these injuries is that he’s gotten so much game time and has made this position his own.”

Spurs are soon expecting further players to return from injury issues, with Destiny Udogie having previously been the first-choice left-back in N17.

Tottenham can end season very well

Postecoglou’s brash manner leaks into his footballing style – it’s all part of the same high-risk, high-reward system.

Consequently, Tottenham will have very good days and horrendously bad days. They have tilted towards the negative side due to not only Postecoglou’s naivety and gung-ho approach at times, but also the lengthy injury list he has had to contend with.

The likes of Spence, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have stepped up to the plate and will benefit from the harsh lessons their team have learned this season so far.

The win over Manchester United can act as a springboard for more positive days at the business end of the term, with Spurs looking to see how highly they can climb the table and progress in the Europa League.

Spence could be a real weapon for Tottenham for years to come in both a defensive and attacking sense, with the 24-year-old on a contract in North London until 2028.
