Ange Postecoglou has been backed heavily in public by his former Tottenham players already.

There has been plenty of uncertainty at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since their Europa League triumph, but Daniel Levy finally decided to dismiss the Australian, with Thomas Frank already appointed as his successor.

Postecoglou could be in line for an immediate return to the Premier League, with the 59-year-old now being heavily linked to take the reins at both Brentford and Leeds.

Harry Redknapp has not been impressed with what he has seen from those at Hotspur Way, though.

Redknapp hits out at Tottenham squad

Postecoglou was a fairly divisive figure during his time in North London, and his sacking has caused plenty of controversy surrounding Tottenham.

However, numerous members of the squad at the N17 outfit have come out and made their support for Postecoglou public.

Cristian Romero even delivered a thank-you message to Postecoglou, less than an hour after Spurs announced Frank’s arrival.

While the players have made their feelings on Levy’s decision perfectly clear, Redknapp has urged that people should not allow themselves to be swayed by their sentiments.

“That’s what footballers do,” he said via WeAreTottenhamTV, about the players’ reaction.

“They say they loved the previous guy, but why didn’t you try a bit harder, and you might not have finished fourth from bottom.

“It’s the same old message – the king is dead, long live the king. That’s football.

“You mustn’t take any notice of what they say.”

Tottenham’s player must take some responsibility for their poor season

As much as it is perfectly natural that the manager shoulders the blame when a team endures a season as poor as Tottenham did last term, it cannot be overlooked that the players should also take some responsibility for their dire domestic showing.

Spurs finished with their lowest points total since the 1976/77 campaign and, had competition at the foot of the table been a little stronger, they could easily have been drawn into a genuine relegation battle.

Postecoglou undoubtedly made himself a target for the majority of the criticism through his somewhat brash personality, but he also deflected the blame away from his players on numerous occasions.

However, as Redknapp eluded to, it’s fair to suggest that the players could have given plenty more to the cause at times.

Their Europa League win understandably put a positive tint on the campaign by the time it concluded, but there can be no denying the fact that the players’ performances in their league season were simply not good enough for a club of Tottenham’s stature.
