Gary Cahill wowed by what ‘unbelievable’ Vicario did for Tottenham v Chelsea

Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea courtesy of Enzo Fernandez’s goal.

The Argentina international opened the scoring with a header from Cole Palmer’s cross when neither Micky Van de Ven nor Destiny Udogie managed to pick up the run.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have now suffered 16 defeats from 30 Premier League outings and look set for a bottom-half finish.

London rivals Chelsea have now done the double over Spurs after beating Postecoglou’s side in a 4-3 thriller back in December.

Gary Cahill left stunned by Guglielmo Vicario

Ultimately, Spurs shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario could not prevent Postecoglou’s men from suffering yet another defeat in their increasingly miserable campaign.

But the Italian received plenty of plaudits when he tipped Jadon Sancho’s goal-bound effort over the bar.

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill said on Sky Sports at half-time as replays were shown [3 April, 20:56]: “That’s unbelievable.”

Postecoglou can only save his job with a Europa League triumph

Vicario’s eye-catching stop was not enough to prevent Spurs from suffering yet another defeat, which epitomises the poor season they are enduring in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s lowly position in the top-flight is far from ideal in any case, but supporters will now be particularly upset that the North London outfit have now suffered defeats to both Arsenal and Chelsea this season.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs owner Daniel Levy is already seeking Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham boss Marco Silva as potential replacements for Postecoglou.

However, the Australian could retain his spot in the Tottenham dugout if he leads the North London side to an unlikely triumph in the Europa League, where they can claim their first trophy since 2008.

Postecoglou’s men will have no excuses if they do not defeat Southampton, who sit bottom of the Premier League, this Sunday in their next fixture.

But more importantly, Spurs must overcome the challenge posed by Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-finals if their boss is intent on avoiding the sack.
