Ex-Spurs Scout: Tottenham set for ‘a real test’ in January with Son Heung-min absence ‘a big miss’
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King insists that January will be “a real test” for Tottenham and the club must act in the transfer market to cope with the “big miss” of Son Heung-min.
Son is set to miss up to six games throughout January and February while he is competing with South Korea at the Asia Cup.
With Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr both set to be unavailable as well due to their commitments with Mali and Senegal at AFCON, Ange Postecoglou’s squad will look very thin come January.

While speaking to Tottenham News, King explained that the club must use the January transfer window to their advantage to cope with the loss of so many key players.
“I think losing Son will be as big a miss as losing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Hopefully, for Spurs’ sake, South Korea get knocked out early, but they are quite a strong nation in comparison to other Asian countries so that is not likely,” he said.
“It is a difficult one, but when you sign players from Asian or African countries, you’re signing them knowing that if these tournaments take place in January or February then you have to get on with it, or sign someone to replace them.

“Having said that, I don’t understand why they have to do these tournaments in the middle of the season. All these players are employed by big clubs. Hopefully, Tottenham have somebody lined up, because Son is a big miss.
“He is a class player, he is the captain and he has carried the mantle this season since Harry Kane left. This will be a real test for Spurs and I am assuming they have somebody lined up to cope with his absence. They will be able to sign players in January, and they need another central defender, another midfielder and another forward player, especially now.”
