Ex-Spurs Scout: ‘Question mark’ remains over Ange Postecoglou decision to name Son Heung-min as Tottenham captain
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King still has a “question mark” over Ange Postecoglou’s decision to name Son Heung-min as Tottenham captain and is not entirely sure the South Korean is suited to the role.
Son was named the club’s new captain prior to the season starting, taking over from veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who remains in north London but has been frozen out of the first-team picture by Postecoglou.
Life as captain started brilliantly for Son, as Spurs went through the first 10 Premier League games of the season unbeaten and found themselves top of the table.

However, Spurs’ fortunes have turned, and the club now find themselves on a three-match losing streak and having slipped out of the Premier League’s top four for the first time since August.
It is times like this when the captain must step up, and King has told Tottenham News he is not sure if Son is the man for the job, but that he has a great opportunity to prove that he is when he leads his team out against Manchester City on Sunday (3 December).
“Son was unlucky against Aston Villa last time out, he found the back of the net three times but they were all just narrowly offside,” he said.
“I think he is the sort of player that has to step up in this injury crisis because who are the senior players around him right now?
“He needs a goal to get that confidence back, whether that will come against Manchester City I am not so sure, but he works so hard and he will be looking to score.

“I do still have a slight question mark over him as captain. I am not sure if he converses enough with the rest of the team on the pitch for my liking.
“This weekend he has really got to step up and prove that he is the star man and that he is the right fit to wear the armband and to do that he needs to encourage the players around him and get them to provide the crosses or the passes for him to score on Sunday. He needs to lead from the front in what is going to be a very difficult game.”
In other Tottenham news, a £200,000-a-week conundrum could derail a potential reunion for Postecoglou.
