Ex-Spurs Scout: Brennan Johnson has been ‘breath of fresh air’ in Tottenham team

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has been impressed by Brennan Johnson since his introduction into the Tottenham team, describing the winger as a “breath of fresh air”.

Johnson made a big-money switch from Nottingham Forest to Tottenham on deadline day, joining the north London side for a reported £47.5million fee (Sky Sports News, 2 September).

He made a slow start to life at the club due to an injury which kept him out of action but has since become a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s starting lineup.

He scored his first goal for the club during their 2-1 defeat against Wolves on 11 November and King has spoken to Tottenham News about how impressed he has been by the Wales international.

“I think Johnson is a good player, he is exciting to watch, he is good running with the ball,” said the ex-Spurs scout.

“When he gets into wide positions he can fire in a dangerous cross and he is a good finisher as well. I think he has brought some life into the Tottenham team, he is a breath of fresh air.

“He works hard, although it does look like he has been struggling to complete a full 90 minutes. Tottenham seemed to lose him against Aston Villa after about 65 minutes, so perhaps he has some more work to do if he wants to improve his match fitness.

“Overall I do quite like him, he is an interesting player and it will be interesting to see if he goes more central and Bryan Gil plays out wide because he looked lively against Villa as well and put him in some good crosses.

“He could have finished a bit better on a few occasions but overall I think these two players will be useful for Tottenham over the coming weeks, and will certainly be used at some stage against Manchester City on Sunday.”

In other Tottenham news, King was left furious after Matty Cash’s “horrendous” challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur.
