Dorrington reveals Tottenham text messages as defender makes transfer admission

Tottenham defender Alfie Dorrington will be thinking about his future after ending his loan spell with Aberdeen by winning the Scottish Cup.

Dorrington signed a new contract with Tottenham before joining Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen on loan in the winter transfer window.

The Dons claimed a shock victory over Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday (24 May) to win the Scottish Cup. Dorrington started the match, but unfortunately scored an own goal as Cameron Carter-Vickers’ header deflected off the defender and past his goalkeeper in the 39th minute.

However, Aberdeen drew level thanks to a Kasper Schmeichel own goal in the 83rd minute, before winning the Scottish Cup via a penalty shoot-out.

Speaking after the match, Dorrington shed some light on messages he had received while discussing his plans for next season.

Dorrington insists the decision on his future lies with Tottenham

Dorrington has had ample time to grow away from Tottenham these past few months, working hard to become a regular starter for Aberdeen.

And the centre-back has admitted he would be delighted if the Dons tried to sign him once more.

Speaking after the win over Celtic, Dorrington said [via Football London], “Obviously, I love the city, I love the club, the staff, the players. I love Tottenham as well. They’re kind of in charge of what I do. I’d be grateful if Aberdeen came back in for me, but it’s all in Tottenham’s hands.”

Dorrington also revealed that he had received text messages from some of his teammates back in North London ahead of the clash at Hampden Park.

“Yeah, they’ve kept in touch the whole time, especially on Friday night, and before the game, they were just messaging me good luck. I think some of them watched the game. It’s just nice to know that I have the support from Tottenham and nice to know that I have the support from Aberdeen as well.”

Tottenham should send Dorrington on loan again

Tottenham have suffered several injuries this season, and if the club is to take one thing away from them, it should be how important good rotational options are to team success.

However, while Dorrington could make a fine addition to Tottenham, he would be of more use with a few years of experience under his belt.

In a Tottenham team that is currently screaming for defensive stability, incorporating a youngster into the squad may not be the best move. However, if given more time to grow as an individual and player, Spurs could have a gem at the back for years to come.

Therefore, another loan move where Dorrington will play regularly is the best course of action.
