Davinson Sanchez decides to leave Tottenham, he wants to try new league despite Premier League interest – report

Davinson Sanchez wants to leave Tottenham this summer with the club agreeing it’s best all parties go their separate ways, according to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra.

The Win Sports TV reporter said via his personal Twitter account on Thursday (15 June) that the 27-year-old centre-back has made his decision to move on with Spurs in agreement because his contract expires next year.

It is understood that there are Premier League clubs who are keen on Sanchez but the former Ajax defender would like to test himself in a new league after a mixed six-year spell in North London.

Correct decision

Sanchez has had a very inconsistent spell at Tottenham.

He joined from Ajax in 2017 for what was then a club-record fee of £42million.

The Colombia international remains one of the most expensive signings in Spurs’ history but it’s fair to say that he hasn’t really lived up to his price tag.

Sanchez played 142 times for Tottenham in the Premier League with only 18 appearances coming in the most recent campaign that’s just finished.

He started just eight times in 2022/23, suggesting that the club could really do without the 27-year-old and with his contract expiring next year, cashing in while they can is the right call.

At the back end of last season, Sanchez was being openly booed by Spurs fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As reported on 15 April in Tottenham’s 3-2 home defeat against Bournemouth, football.london journalist Alasdair Gold admitted it was “uncomfortable to watch” the fans’ reaction to the Colombian.

Sanchez came off the bench to replace the injured Clement Lenglet in the 35th minute but his performance was so terrible that manager Cristian Stellini subbed the centre-back off in the 58th minute due to a comedy of errors.

Matias Vina and Dominic Solanke both scored for the Cherries when Sanchez could have done a lot better to stop them. In fact, with Solanke’s goal, he essentially assisted the English striker.

Sanchez has overstayed his welcome in North London, unfortunately.

Hopefully his next team is one he can flourish at because he certainly hasn’t done that at Tottenham.

In other Tottenham news, Harvey Barnes could be the key Spurs need to unlock defences in the Premier League next season.
