Daniel Levy ‘won’t hesitate’ to sack Postecoglou as Tottenham replacement mooted

Ange Postecoglou will only keep his job at Tottenham Hotspur if he guides them to Carabao Cup success, according to Jamie O’Hara.

O’Hara, speaking live on talkSPORT on Thursday evening (16 January), ranted over the predicament in which Spurs find themselves, now marooned 13th in the Premier League table.

Tottenham lead by a single goal on aggregate as they head to Anfield for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg next month, with pressure building on Daniel Levy to take action.

“If Tottenham don’t win the Carabao Cup, Ange Postecoglou will be sacked,” O’Hara said. “If Spurs finish the season in the bottom half of the table and don’t win a trophy, Daniel Levy will not hesitate to replace him.

“You can’t lose 11 games, be in 13th place halfway through the season, and expect to stay as manager of Tottenham. The Premier League is the ‘bread and butter’, that’s his primary objective – finish in the top five. Levy’s main concern is the Premier League; Jose Mourinho was sacked for his league performance a week before a cup final! I have no doubts Postecoglou could face the same treatment if he doesn’t turn things around, especially if a manager becomes available that Levy likes the look of.

“Tottenham look a million miles away from qualifying for European football next season and Postecoglou will be hoping he can pick up some points in the league or pull off a result against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup to keep him in the job. Tottenham won’t win the Europa League because they’re too inconsistent; they’ll come up against a better side in the latter stages of the competition and they’ll lose over two legs. Winning the Carabao Cup is Postecoglou’s only chance of staying in the job.”

Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town and Edin Terzic currently lead the BetVictor market at 6/1 to become Postecoglou’s successor should he face the chop; Marco Silva of Fulham alongside Didier Deschamps and Gareth Southgate all lie at 8/1.

Postecoglou future rests on Tottenham winning Carabao Cup

For Postecoglou to earn a much-needed vote of confidence, it looks as if he will have to deliver the trophy Tottenham last lifted 17 years ago at Wembley.

The Australian has come in for swathes of criticism over recent weeks following his team’s erratic run of results and unpredictable performances, but he shows little sign of changing.

There have been games in which he has looked to adapt to an extent – the first leg win over Liverpool on 8 January being a case in point – but Spurs fans are largely exasperated by the lack of discipline to win matches in which they approach favourites.

Tottenham next visit an Everton side flirting with relegation and who have just looked to former manager David Moyes to steer them away from the mire. That contest at Goodison Park (19 January) could literally be, as the cliche goes, any score.

Spurs will also be aiming to advance in both the Europa League and FA Cup, as the chances of silverware still remain in North London.
