Chris Sutton blasts ‘English snobbery’ after Postecoglou disgrace at Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou has shut down his critics at Tottenham, as Chris Sutton takes aim at English football fans.

Spurs won the Europa League final on Wednesday (21 May) at San Mames, beating Manchester United 1-0.

The Australian manager has written his name in the North London outfit’s history books, breaking their 17-year wait for silverware.

Postecoglou hasn’t had the best of Premier League campaigns, with the Lilywhites sitting 17th in the table, but he’s now won a trophy, despite seemingly heavy criticism in England.

Postecoglou success away from Tottenham looked down on by English fans

English fans look down on Postecoglou’s success away from Spurs, Sutton says.

The ex-forward believes the former Celtic boss has taken flak down south due to “English snobbery”, which has been termed disgraceful.

Sutton feels the 59-year-old head coach is rightly proud of his successes in Australia, Japan and Scotland, but those accolades aren’t really considered impressive in England.

The ex-Norwich City ace wrote in the Record (24 May): “And as for Ange [Postecoglou], the flak he’s taken is down to nothing but English snobbery. Listen, I’m as English as they come, but even I can see how arrogant and dismissive some people can be down here.

“Postecoglou is rightly proud of his career, but down south they look down their noses at his successes in Australia and Japan — and Scotland.

“It’s disgrace. And I’m convinced a lot of it is because he’s Australian.”

Europa League success vindicates Postecoglou at Spurs

Postecoglou promised a title in his second season at Spurs and delivered it in emphatic fashion.

The Australian manager was being ridiculed by many for his comments earlier in the season, but he’s now vindicated himself.

Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici will have to make a massive decision regarding the 59-year-old coach’s future now that he’s won in Bilbao.

It felt like the only reason Tottenham stuck by Postecoglou for so long despite their abysmal form in the Premier League was down to their prospects in Europe.

Now that the Australian manager has won the title, it presents the North London outfit’s hierarchy with a significant dilemma.

If they sack the 59-year-old head coach, it may baffle some as he’s become their most successful manager in recent years after winning the Europa League.

There’s also an argument to be made that Spurs’ domestic record warrants a change in the dugout after losing 21 league matches this season.

While Postecoglou has seemingly indicated a desire to continue at the Lilywhites, no matter what his future entails, he’ll go down as a legend in N17.
