Chris Sutton aims ‘Spursy’ dig at Tottenham amid ‘disaster’ Europa League claim

Chris Sutton has aimed a sly dig at Tottenham as they prepare for the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United.

Spurs are just one step away from ending their 17-year-long wait to win a trophy, having beaten Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate to qualify for the Europa League final.

That means Ange Postecoglou could also keep his promise of delivering a trophy in his second season in charge of the North London giants.

Tottenham will be positive of their chances of walking out of the San Mames stadium in Bilbao with the European trophy, having emerged victorious against Manchester United three times already this season.

Sutton makes Tottenham v Manchester United claim

However, Sutton has taken aim at Tottenham by suggesting that it would be ‘Spursy’ of Postecoglou’s side to fumble at the final hurdle.

The BBC pundit, though, would like to see the Lilywhites beat Manchester United and win the Europa League for ‘Postecoglou’s sake’.

He pointed out that both the Premier League teams have had ‘dreadful’ domestic campaigns, and things could turn disastrous for the losers in Bilbao.

“What are you saying there then? Are you saying it’s a foregone conclusion?”, Sutton said on BBC Football Focus (12:01 pm).

“I don’t know, it would be sort of might be a bit Spursy, wouldn’t it, for them to go and lose it, but I don’t know.

“In many hopes, I hope for Ange Postecoglou’s sake that his team do get over the line.

“I mean, both teams have had dreadful Premier League seasons, but this game is so extreme, isn’t it, because for one club we’re going to view their manager and their season completely differently.

“For the losing club, it’s going to be an absolute disaster.”

Postecoglou faces sack at Spurs

Postecoglou has had a nightmare of a season at Tottenham, having lost 19 of his 35 Premier League games.

However, the former Celtic manager now has the perfect opportunity to prove his doubters wrong by leading Spurs to Europa League glory.

The North London giants have not won a trophy since 2008, meaning Postecoglou could etch his name in the history books with a win in Bilbao in less than two weeks’ time.

However, that might not be enough for the 59-year-old to save his job as the Spurs manager, as Daniel Levy is already looking for a replacement.

The Premier League club have been linked with several managers, including Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

Roberto De Zerbi has also emerged as a genuine option for Tottenham just a year after he left Brighton for Marseille.
